1) South County Organizer Update

Reform Immigration for America Campaign

The Immigration Committee continues to do outreach and registering people into the network. We have collected more than 1,000 letters directed to Congress, Senate and the White House. We have register hundreds of people into the text message system. Last weekend of August 28th- August 30th I.D.E.A.S. from UCSB and the Youth Committee from Santa Maria along with groups from all over California had their statewide retreat of the CA Dream Network here in Santa Barbara. The Network is composed of student-run groups from community colleges campuses or Universities from all over the state that support and advocate for undocumented students. At the end of their retreat 80 students from all over California took the streets of Santa Barbara and collected signatures and registered people into the text message network. They registered more than 150 people into the text message system. If you still have not send out your message send your message to 69866 with the word "justice" to receive automatic updates from the national Reform Immigration for America Campaign. In addition, the Immigration Committee is closely following the talks on Health Care and Immigrant inclusion on Health Care. The Immigration Committee as well as other PUEBLO volunteers was present at the counter protest in front of Lois Capps office las August 13th. "We hope to be able to have a health care reform that does not forget immigrants and the importance of providing quality affordable health care to everyone in our communities. This is why we are here because we want to let the Congresswoman that we are by her side, supporting her, but that we also need her leadership so that we can include as many people in this health care reform as possible." Said Martha Mendoza when asked by a reporter why was she there? Join us in this and other fights for Immigrant's Rights! Immigration Committee meetings are every other Wednesday from 7:00pm-8:00pm at the PUEBLO office.

Reforma Migratoria Pro-America

El comite de migracion continue informando a la comunidad y registrando a personas en el sistema del mensaje de texto. Hemos recaudado mas de 1,000 cartas en apoyo a una reforma migratoria justa y humana, estas cartas estan dirigidas al Congreso, Senado y a la Casa Blanca. Hemos registrado a cientos de personas en el sistema del mensaje de texto. El pasado fin de semana del 28 de Agosto al 30 de Agosto I.D.E.A.S. de UCSB y el comit� de jovenes de PUEBLO en Santa Maria fueron anfritiones del retiro estatal de el grupo CA DREAM Network. Este grupo esta formado por grupos liderados por estudiantes de diferentes Universidades o Colegios Comunitarios. El retiro acabo con broche de oro en el cual mas 80 estudiantes tomaron las calles de Santa Barbara y registraron a mas de 150 personas en el sistema del mensaje de texto. Tambien el Comite de Migracion esta atento a las platicas sobre la Reforma al Cuidado Medico. El Comit� de Migracion al igual que otros voluntarios de PUEBLO estuvieron presentes el pasado Agosto 13 en la contra protesta en la oficina de Lois Capps. "Esperamos tener una Reforma al Cuidado medico que incluya tambien a los inmigrantes y que provee cuidado medico de calidad y bajo costo para todas las personas de los Estados Unidos. Por eso etamos aqu� dejandole saber a la Congresita que estamos con ella apoyandola, pero que tambien necesitamos de su liderazgo para poder incluir a cuantas mas personas podamos." Said Martha Mendoza cuando un reportero le pregunto por que estaba ah�? Unetenos en esta y otras luchas por los derechos de los inmigrantes! El comit� de Migracion se junta cada otra semana el Miercoles de 7:00pm-8:00pm en la oficina de PUEBLO.

Housing Committee: Justice for Renters Campaign!

PUEBLO's Housing Committee along with other Rental Housing Roundtable members were present at the 1st County Hearing in support of amending County Ordinance 4444 so that it creates greater protection for tenant's who are being unjustly evicted. There were 33 people in attendance and there were 4 tenant's giving public testimony. "I have been evicted twice in Santa Barbara County, it was a stressful situation... I know that evictions will continue to happen in Santa Barbara, we are not trying to stop them we are just trying to make sure that tenants have as many resources and support to make that transition." Said Zoila Aguila tenant from Santa Barbara County, single mother and one of the families evicted from Isla Vista. During the County Hearing the supervisors were responsive to the testimonies and directed staff to gather information in regards to amending the ordinance 4444. This is a strong step towards achieving Justice for Renters! If you would like to be part of the campaign join us at our Housing Committee meetings every other Tuesday at 6:30pm at the PUEBLO office.

Comite de Vivienda: Justicia para los Inquilinos

El Comit� de Vivienda de PUEBLO en conjunto con otras organizaciones parte de la coalicion de la Mesa Redonda de Inquilinos estuvieron presentes en el primera junta en apoyo a los cambios a la ley del Condado 4444, para que asi incluya mas protecciones a los inquilinos que estan siendo injustamente desalojados. Hibieron 33 personas en asistencia y 4 inquilinos dieron testimonio publico en la junta con los supervisores. " Yo eh sido desalojada dos veces en el Condado de Santa Barbara y fue una situacion muy estresante...Sabemos que los desalojos van a seguir pasando y no estamos tratando de parar los desalojos pero lo que queremos es que si hay una forma de que podemos darles a los inquilinos mas recursos para que puedan hacer una transicion mas comoda durante esta situacion tan estresante entonces lo deberiamos hacer" dijo Zoila Aguilar inquilina de el Condado de Santa Barbara, madre soltera y parte de una de las familias desalojadas de Isla Vista. Durante la junta del Condado los Supervisores escucharon con atencion a los testimonios y dirijieron a los empleados del Condado de investigar los cambios a la ley 4444 propuestos por la Coalicion de la Mesa Redonda de Inquilinos. Este es un paso para poder tener Justicia para los Inquilinos! Transportation Committee and the Line 7

The Transportation Committee celebrated the installment of the bi lateral service of Line 8 now know as Line 7. The Transportation Committee had a press conference with 45 bus riders and MTD Staff to celebrated the return of Line 8 (Now Line 7). During the press conference there was also information for the general public about the service changes that happened on August 24th. "We are very happy that the service is back, we know that this was a direct result of our work. We organized our community, we collected petitions and we were present at the MTD meetings. We know that change does not happened by chance we had to work for it and we are motivated to continue to build our relationship with MTD," said Maria Castro member of the Transportation Committee. For a detailed report of the changes to service please go to sbmtd.gov or pick up a Schedule Guide at the Transit Center. The Transportation Committee also makes a strong invitation to the community and all bus riders to attend the Community Transit Talk next Friday September 18th at 5:30pm at the MTD Offices on 550 Olive St. a courtesy bus pass will be provided for the return trip for bus riders that need it. Comite de Transporte y La Linea 7

El comit� de transporte celebro la reinstitucion de el servicio bilateral de la Linea 8 ahora llamada Linea 7. El comit� de Transporte tuvo una conferencia de prensa con 45 usuarios del transporte publico y empleados de MTD celebrando el regreso de la Linea 8 (Ahora Linea 7). Durante la conferencia de prensa tambien se dio informacion sobre los cambios de servicio generales que ocurririan en el 24 de Agosto. "Nosotros estamos muy contentas de que el servicio esta de regreso, sabemos que fue un resultado de todo el trabajo que hicimos. Nosotros organizamos a nuestra comunidad, colectamos peticiones y estuvimos presentes en las juntas de MTD. Sabemos que el cambio no pasa solo por coincidencia, tuvimos que trabajar por el y estamos motivadas en continuar esta relacion mas estrecha con MTD." Dijo Maria Castro miembra del Comit� de transporte. Por un reporte mas especifico de los cambios al servicio de autobuses visita la pagina de internet sbmtd.gov o recoge un libro en el Centro de Transito. El comit� de Transporte invita a la comunidad y a todos los usuarios a asistir a la proxima junta comunitaria con MTD que sera el proximo viernes 18 de septiembre a las 5:30pm en las oficinas de MTD en la 550 Olive St. un pase de cortesia de viaje de regreso se les dara a todos los presentes que lo necesiten. Celebrating a Legacy Continuing a Struggle: Remembering Ted Kennedy

PUEBLO's Santa Barbara Immigration Committee and the Democratic Party of Santa Barbara County last Saturday August 29th had a small vigil celebrating the amazing legacy of advocacy for low income families, minorities, women, the marginalized that Senator Ted Kennedy left and renewing our commitment as a community to those values and the translation of those values in advocacy and policy making. The vigil was full of moving speakers, fond memories of Ted Kennedy and a strong feeling of commitment to further continue his work from everyone attending. "Ted Kennedy taught us that compromise was good but he was someone that was never afraid to fight for what he though was right. He always made it very clear in what side he was on and that that side was the right one... He will be greatly missed," said Daraka Larimore-Hall during the vigil. Some of our elected officials present were 1st District Supervisor Salud Carbajal, City Council Member Grant House and Helene Schneider. Several community members signed the poster in memory of Ted Kennedy and it is being displayed at our PUEBLO office. If you would like to sign the poster please come by the PUEBLO office.

Celebrando un Legado y Conitnuando La lucha: Recordando a Ted Kennedy

El comit� de migracion de PUEBLO de Santa Barbara y el Partido Democrata del Condado de Santa Barbara el pasado 29 de agosto hubo una vigilia celebrando el legado de lucha y entrega por las comunidades de bajo ingreso, minorias, mujeres que el Senador Ted Kennedy nos dejo. El proposito de la vigilia no solo era el de celebrar pero tambien el de renovar nuestro compromisos con esos valores que lo hicieron una persona tan querida y como continue apoyando esos valores a nivel de ley. . La vigilia estuvo llena de presentadores muy inspiradores, de memorias muy gratas del Senador Ted Kennedy y por un sentimiento muy fuerte de compromiso de todos los que atendieron para seguir continuando el trabajo del Senador. "Ted Kennedy nos enseno que los compromisos y negociaciones son buenos pero nunca tuvo miedo por luchar por lo que el pensaba estaba bien. El siempre hizo muy claro en que lado de los asuntos el estaba, y que el lado en el que el estaba era el correcto... Se le extrenara mucho." Dijo Daraka Larimore-Hall durante la vigilia. Algunos de nuestros oficiales electos presentes fueron Supervisor del Primer Distrito Salud Carbajal, Consejales de la Ciudad Grant House y Helene Schneider. Varios de los miembros comunitarios que asistieron firmaron el poster en honor al Senador y esta en la oficina de PUEBLO, si te gustaria firmar el poster pasa por la oficina de PUEBLO.

Elections Kick Off BBQ!

The Elections Committee along with the other PUEBLO precinct leaders would like to invite you and other community members to our first Precinct Walk. We will gather this Saturday September 12th at Ortega Park at noon. We will have a Barbeque and then we will walk to contact voters. PUEBLO will walk to support Helen Schneider for Mayor and for Grant House for City Council. "We walk precincts because that is the only way that we make sure that the people that are elected into our city prioritize the issues of the low income community of Santa Barbara. This is why we endorse Helene Schneider and Grant House because we feel that those are people have been strong advocates for the low-income families of Santa Barbara and their issues. " said Dora Perez, precinct captain of precinct 12-1233. In addition, PUEBLO is saying NO on Measure B because it will affect the amount of affordable units that can be built on the city of Santa Barbara. There will also be an informational meeting for all of the PUEBLO elections volunteers this Wednesday September 9th at 6:30pm at Presidio Springs 721 Laguna St. Santa Barbara, CA. Lanzamiento de las Elecciones BBQ

El Comit� de Elecciones al igual que todos los otros capitanes de recinto de PUEBLO les gustaria invitarlos a nuestra primera caminata de recintos. Nos reuniremos este Sabado 12 de septiembre en el parque Ortega al medio dia. Tendremos una carne asada y despues caminaremos para contactar a los votantes. PUEBLO va a caminar para apoyar a Helene Schneider como alcalde y a Grant House para consejal de la ciudad. "Caminamos recintos por que es una de las maneras la cual nos aseguramos que las personas que se elijen a la ciudad tomen prioridad en nuestros asuntos como comunidad de bajos ingresos. Es por eso que hemos decidido endorsar a Helene Schneider y Grant House por que esas personas han sido apoyadores de los asuntos importantes para la comunidad de bajos ingresos de Santa Barbara" dijo Dora Perez, capitan de recinto del 12-1233. Tambien, PUEBLO dice NO a la Medida B por que afectara el numero de viviendas de bajo costo que se puede crear en la ciudad de Santa Barbara. Tambien habra una junta informativa para todos los voluntarios de PUEBLO en las elecciones este Miercoles 9 de septiembre a las 6:30pm en Presidio Springs en la 721 Laguna St. Santa Barbara, CA. 2) North County Organizer Update

Immigration Committee:

The Santa Maria Immigration Committee has continued to recruit supporters for the Reform Immigration for America Campaign by asking community members to text "Justice" to 69866 in order to receive updates on actions for the nationwide campaign. We have gained more committee members who are motivated to making changes in Santa Maria. The committee met with city council member Alice Patino about the work we've been doing around car confiscations in relation to undocumented immigrant drivers. Alice Patino is in favor of the education we are giving to the community and says she will do what she can to restrict checkpoints to only after 8:00pm.

The committee is planning to hold vigil in remembrance of Ted Kennedy on October 12th. More information to come....

Youth Committee:

The Youth Committee has continued to raise money for their scholarship fund for low-income students. They have begun to conduct fundraising trainings for members.. The youth committee has been working in collaboration with student organizations from local schools and Hancock College. The committee participated in a training put on by CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles) on mobilizing the immigrant vote. The youth committee continues to make a large impact with the skills and tools they are gaining.

Housing Committee:

The housing committee has been making personal visits to recruits new members. The committee is working to support Ordinance 4444, a piece of county wide legislation to provide economic compensation to tenants that are evicted because of demolitions, condo conversion, renovations and rezoning. Since mobilizing community members to attend the county hearing on August 18th for the ordinance, the committee has phone banked and collected petitions for the ordinance. They have set a goal of collecting 1000 signatures. Later on this month the committee will be organizing a Know Your Rights Training for Tenants.

Comite de Migracion:

El comite de migracion de Santa Maria ha seguido recluatando apoyantes a la campa�a Reforma America Pro America por pedir que la gente mande "Justicia" a 69866 para poder recibir noticias de acciones de la campa�a. Hemos reclutado nuevos miembros al comit� que ahora estan motivados a hacer cambios en Santa Maria. El comit� se junto con miembra del concilio Alice Patino sobre el trabajo que ha hecho sobre la confiscacion de carros en relaci�n a los inmigrantes indocumentados. Alice Patino esta a favor a la educacion que damos a la comunidad y dijo que va a hacer lo que pueda para hacer que los retenes solo pasen despues de las 8:00pm.

El comit� esta planeando organizar una vigilia en memoria del Ted Kennedy el 12 de Octubre.

Comit� de Jovenes:

El comit� de jovenes ha seguido recaudando fondos para su becas para estudiantes de bajos ingresos. Han organizado entrenamientos sobre the recaudacion de fondos para sus miembros. El comit� ha trabajado en colaboracion con otras organizaciones estudantiles de otras escuelas incluso el Colegio Hancock. El comit� se participo en un entranamiento organizado por CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles) sobre mobilizar el voto inmigrante. El comit� de jovenes sigue haciendo gran cambios con las habilidades y herramientas que estan consiguiendo.

Comit� de Viviendas:

El comit� de viviendas ha hecho visitas personales para reclutar nuevos miembros. El comit� esta trabajando en apoyar la Ordenanza del Condado 4444, una ordenanza que proveera compensacion economica a los inquilinos que han sido desalojados por causa de demolicion, conversion de unidades de renta a venta, renovaciones y razonamineto. Desde el comit� se mobilizo a miembros de la comunidad para que asistieran un foro que el condado tuvo sobre la ordenanza, el comit� ha hecho llamadas y ha colectado firmas a favor a la ordenanza. Tienen una meta de colectar 100 cartas. Este mes el comit� de viviendas organizara un entrenamietno para ense�ar los derechos de los inquilinos.

In the November municipal elections, Santa Barbara residents will vote on Measure B, a proposal to amend the City Charter and reduce maximum allowable building heights to 40 feet in the historic core and 45 feet elsewhere in the city. Prominent politicians and community leaders are arrayed on both sides. At stake are concerns over the historic image and lifestyle of Santa Barbara as a charming Spanish Mediterranean suburban sprawl, issues of local and regional planning, problems with transportation and energy- all concerns of great environmental importance. The Town Hall Forum features the following panel of speakers, including both advocates and opponents of Measure B:
