1. PUEBLO Action Fund Endorsements and Elections Volunteer Opportunities

PUEBLO Action Fund is excited to announce our endorsements for the important upcoming June 8th Primary Elections!

Endorsements:
Das Williams for CA State Assembly - Das has been an advocate for PUEBLO issues ever since the formation of the Coalition for a Living Wage. In Sacramento he will continue to be a powerful voice for working class and low-income families' issues.
Janet Wolf for County Supervisor - Janet has been a key vote on the County Board of Supervisors during tough economic times in helping to prevent cuts to necessary social services and in working towards increasing the quantity and availability affordable housing countywide. Her reelection will be critical as the vote for a countywide tenant's rights ordinance approaches as well as on other progressive issues.
Joyce Dudley for District Attorney - Joyce Dudley's willingness to work with key community organizations such as our allies at Movimiento Esperanza to develop a Restorative Justice program in response to youth violence is critical to creating the solutions that this community needs.
State Propositions:

NO on Prop. 13 - PROPERTY TAXES AND EARTHQUAKE SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS - Property taxes are a key funding source for state and local educational programs and social services; in the midst of an uncertain economy any decreases in the funding of these programs will have a negative impact on low-income families and students. Additionally, without current laws to protect tenants' rights, making earthquake safety improvements in exchange for lower property taxes would be one more reason for some landlords to initiate the mass-evictions that have already affected so many families in our community.

NO on Prop. 14 - TOP TWO PRIMARY ELECTIONS - Voting on which two names will appear on the November ballot in primary elections which historically have low levels of participation among working class and low-income communities, young people, and communities of color. This is a step backward in electing to office the diversity of candidates representative of the state population.

YES on Prop. 15 - PUBLIC CAMPAIGN FUNDING - Prop. 15 is a first step towards the public funding of political campaigns which would allow more working class and low-income individuals to seriously consider running for elected office leading to a diversity of elected officials more representative of the statewide population and stronger representation of all sectors of the society.

NO on Prop. 16 - LOCAL PUBLIC ELECTRICITY - Pacific Gas & Electric has already spent $28.5 million to sell this measure to voters to prevent competition with municipalities and new green energy providers. Because a 2/3 vote is extremely difficult to obtain, PG&E will benefit leaving all communities, including low-income and immigrant communities more vulnerable to rate increases from private electric companies.

NO on Prop. 17 - AUTO INSURANCE - Many cannot maintain continuous coverage of their car insurance. The economic crisis has put many working class and low-income families in a situation where they are struggling to find money for necessities such as rent, food, health or education forcing many to cancel their insurance policies and/or give up driving completely. Many university students, seniors, and some environmentalists also fail to maintain continuous coverage for economic, medical, or personal reasons. Additionally, some immigrants with lapses in their legal status are also unable to maintain their insurance. This proposition could cause these groups to pay more for their car insurance resulting in an increase in the number of uninsured drivers on the road. It is a bad idea to make California roads more dangerous by changing the rules to penalize those that have not continually maintained their auto insurance due to economic necessity or other reasons choice.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Now that we have our endorsements, it is time to educate and mobilize the community to get out and vote! We need our members and volunteers to come out and support the candidates with a commitment to working class and low-income communities county and statewide. We will be knocking doors and calling voters from now through June 8th. We would love you all to show up and help!

Campaign Kick-Off Rally and BBQ! On Saturday, May 8th at 10:00am we will be meeting in Oak Park for a rally, precinct walk, and BBQ. Speakers include Das Williams, Hannah-Beth Jackson, and PUEBLO Member Dora Perez! After the rally, we will train volunteers and walk precincts before returning to Oak Park for the Kick-off BBQ. Invite your friends and family to help Get Out the Vote! BE SURE TO WEAR YOUR PUEBLO SHIRT AND CHECK IN WITH THE PUEBLO TABLE UPON ARRIVAL! Also, to ensure that we have enough food for everyone, it would help us if you confirm with our office (805-882-2484).

Weekly Get Out the Vote Work: After the event on the 8th, we'll be meeting regularly at the office (114 E. Haley St. Suite E) and in Old Town Goleta (location to be announced) to walk precincts and phonebank on the following days and times:

Wednesdays - Precinct Walk, 5:00 - 7:00 and Phonebank, 6:00 - 8:30
Thursdays - Phonebank, 6:00 - 8:30

PUEBLO Action Fund esta muy emocionado para compartir nuestros respaldos para las importantes elecciones primarias el martes, 8 de junio!
Respaldos:
Das Williams por la Asamblea del Estado - Das ha sido un aliado importante para la organizacion desde el inicio de la Coalicion para un Sueldo Justo. En Sacramento sera una voz fuerte para la clase trabajadora y las familias de bajos ingresos.

Janet Wolf por Supervisora del Condado - Janet ha sido un voto clave en la Mesa de Supervisores del Condado durante del crisis economica a favor de aumentar la cantidad de alojamiento para personas de bajos ingresos y en mantener los servicios sociales de los que dependen muchos. Su victoria sera necesaria para seguir avanzando con legislacion progresista como la ordenanza para los derechos de inquilinos que se votara en los proximos meses.

Joyce Dudley for District Attorney - Joyce Dudley ha mostrado su voluntad en trabajar con organizaciones claves de la comunidad en desarrollar un programa de justicia restaurativa para responder a la violencia juvenil sera importante para realizar las soluciones que buscamos en la comunidad.

Iniciativas del Estado:

NO a la Iniciativa 13 - IMPUESTOS DE PROPIEDAD Y SEGURIDAD DE TERREMOTO - Los impuestos de propiedad son claves para mantener los presupuestos de programas educativos y sociales al nivel estatal y local; en plena crisis economica cualquier cambio que disminuya los presupuestos de estos programas tendra un efecto negativo en las familias de bajos ingresos y los estudiantes. Ademas, sin leyes para proteger los derechos de los inquilinos, este cambio da a los propietarios una oportunidad de bajar sus impuestos por construir mejoramientos anti-terremotos lo cual pone nuestra comunidad a riesgo de mas desalojos masivos que ya han pasado a demasiadas familias latinas y de bajos ingresos.

NO a la Iniciativa 14 - ELECCIONES PRIMARIAS DE LOS DOS MAS POPULARES - Decidir en que dos candidatos se pueden elegir en noviembre por elecciones primarias de junio, las cuales historicamente tiene escaso participacion de la clase trabajadora y familias de bajos ingresos e incluso pocos jovenes y personas no-Europeos, calla a la voz de la comunidad por quitarles alternativas en las elecciones generales. Es un paso atras en la participacion civica y la busqueda de diversidad en nuestro gobierno.

SI a la Iniciativa 15 - FONDOS PUBLICOS DE CAMPANA - La iniciativa 15 es un primer paso hacia un sistema de dineros publicos en las campanas politicas que permitiria que individuos de bajos ingresos pueden entrar en la politica lo que podria fortalecer a la representacion de la clase trabajadora y proveer la creacion de mas programas que ayuden a mejorar la vida de las familias de bajos ingresos.

NO a la Iniciativa 16 - ELECTRICIDAD PUBLICA LOCAL - Pacific Gas & Electric ya ha gastado $28.5 millones para la campana con el fin de prevenir la competicion contra municipios y proveedores nuevos de energias limpias. Obtener una supermayoria de 2/3 en una eleccion es redificil asi que PG&E protegera su interes economico por dejar a todas las comunidades, incluyendo las de bajos ingresos y inmigrantes, sin alternativas cuando se enfrenten a un aumento en el precio de electricidad por iniciativa de una compania electrica privada.

NO a la Iniciativa 17 - SEGUROS DE AUTOS - Muchas familias de bajos ingresos no pueden mantener cobertura continua de sus seguros de auto. La crisis economica ha dejado a muchos con una carencia de dinero para necesidades como la renta, alimentacion, educacion y salud que ha resultado en que muchos ya han dejado de usar sus autos y/o pagar sus seguros. Incluso los estudiantes, ancianos, y unos medioambientalistas se encuentran sin seguro de auto por necesidad economica, salud, eleccion personal u otras razones. Aparte, muchos inmigrantes pierden sus seguros por cambio del estado de la documentacion. No es justo castigar estos grupos por aumentar lo que pagan por cambiar las reglas al beneficio de las companias de seguros.

Oportunidades de Voluntariado:

Ya que hemos decidido a quien vamos a respaldar, nos toca educar y movilizar a la comunidad! Necesitamos que nuestros miembros y voluntarios salgan de sus casas para apoyar a los candidatos que se comprometen a ayudar a la clase trabajadora y comunidades de bajos ingresos por todo el condado y el estado. Estaremos tocando puertas y llamando a votantes hasta el 8 de junio. Nos encantaria que vengan para ayudar!

El sabado 8 de mayo a las 10 de la manana nos reuniremos en Oak Park, (300 Alamar Ave, Bus #3, cerca de Hospital Cottage). Los oradores incluyen Das Williams, Hannah-Beth Jackson, y Miembro de PUEBLO Dora Perez! Despues de escuchar a los oradores, vamos a hacer un entrenamiento y salir a caminar recintos. Cuando terminamos volvemos a Oak Park para Carne Asada gratis! Inviten a sus familias y amigos para promover la participacion civica y comida gratis! ACUERDENSE A PONERSE SUS PLAYERAS DE PUEBLO Y A REGISTRARSE EN LA MESA DE PUEBLO CUANDO LLEGAN! Y ayudennos asegurar que tengamos comida para todos por avisar a la oficina cuantos traen (805.882.24.84).

3. Community Values Forum: Immigration Reform

PUEBLO's Immigration Committee, Santa Barbara Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice, the American Indian Movement, UCSB & SBCC IDEAS, the American Civil Liberties Union, Just Communities, and La Casa de la Raza cordially invite you to our annual immigration forum,

Community Values Forum: Immigration Reform, the economy and safe communities, taking place on Saturday May 15th, 2010 at 5:30p.m. in the Saint Raphael Catholic Church Hall located at 5444 Hollister Avenue Goleta, CA (The program will start at 5:45p.m.)

As with our past events, we are pleased to host many distinguished members of the Santa Barbara community, including leading scholars from UCSB and elected officials.
Some of the invited elected officials are: Sheriff Bill Brown, Police Chief Cam Sanchez, Supervisor Salud Carbajal, Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider, Santa Barbara City Council Members Bendy White and Grant House, and Goleta City Council Members Roger Aceves.

Some of the confirmed elected officials are: A representative of Congresswoman Lois Capps, Representatives of Supervisors Janet Wolf and Doreen Farr, Goleta City Council Members Margaret Connell and Ed Easton, and Santa Barbara City Council Member Das Williams.

The forum will be a town hall style format in which several speakers will provide information to the public in regards to car confiscations, checkpoints and the Secure Communities program. This is an opportunity for our community to stay informed about the local programs that have an impact on the immigrant community and to create a respectful dialogue between the community and elected officials in search of commonsense solutions.
