# 2. Arizona’s SB 1070 Further Polarizes our Nation
-A letter written by our Executive Director Belen Seara in light of the
enforcement of SB1070 on July 29th,2010
At a time when the federal government should be enacting a humane and fair immigration reform, the state of Arizona is implementing a regressive and unrealistic policy that will only further polarize the nation. PUEBLO applauds U.S District Judge Susan Bolton for blocking the implementation of some of the most controversial provisions of SB 1070. However, the overall law will still be implemented on July 29.
Arizona’s SB 1070 is not the solution to our broken immigration system. And worse, it will undermine public safety. This type of anti-immigrant legislation results in mistrust between the immigrant community and law enforcement. Those who are witness or victims of crimes, domestic violence or robbery will not report to the police for fear of being detained. That puts at risk the safety of not just immigrants but the whole community.
But what is most disturbing about this legislation is that legalizes racial profiling by requiring police officers to ask about immigration status to anyone they stop that looks like an undocumented immigrant. Moreover, the law criminalizes American citizens or legal residents who transport, harbor or shield undocumented immigrants, making even the driving of undocumented children to school a misdemeanor.
PUEBLO supporters should call the federal government today to ask for humane and comprehensive immigration reform. You can visit www.reformimmigrationforamerica.org to send an email or fax to the White House.
# 3. Rental Housing Roundable Update/ Noticas de la Mesa Redonda de Inquilinos
Rental Housing Roundable Update
Since the Rental Housing Roundtable's impressive showing at the Board of Supervisors hearing on April 20th, the coalition has been working hard to ensure that the amendments to Ordinance 4444 get passed when it comes back before the Board in October. Ordinance 4444, a tenants' rights ordinance, would strengthen protections for tenants who are evicted at no fault of their own. Specifically, the Rental Housing Roundtable seeks to mitigate the social and economic impacts of evictions due to condo conversion, demolition or renovation. The Rental Housing Roundtable was created to address the lack of legal protections for Santa Barbara renters in order to end unjust evictions and unfair treatment of tenants, increase rental units available and develop cooperative ownership. Recently, the Rental Housing Roundtable held a campaign assessment to not only look at the current campaign, but also to examine the local rental culture in the area to determine new areas to focus on. The campaign assessment brought to light the need for the Rental Housing Roundtable to continue advocating for tenants and promoting progressive policy changes. If you would like to get involved with the Rental Housing Roundtable or if you have any questions, please email sbrentalhousing@gmail.com or call (805)-882-2484.

South County Update (Immigration, Election & Housing Committees)
Immigration Committee
After a very successful community values forum, in which our Santa Barbara community
had a courageous conversation about the issues affecting our local immigrant communities and attempted to provide for solutions. The Immigration Committee continues to be part of the national and local movement for just, humane and practical solutions for Immigration Reforms and change of legislation. “Our push for comprehensive immigration reform is like a language; it will die out when there are not enough people speaking it” said Ana G. Cid, UCSB student and member of PUEBLO’s Immigration Committee. We invite you to join us at our next Immigration Committee meetings. They are every other THURSDAY at 6:30p.m. at the PUEBLO Office , please call our office for the specific dates.
Elections Committee
June 8th of 2010 thousands of Santa Barbara voters turned out to the polls and dozens of PUEBLO Action Fund volunteers went door to door to remind Santa Barbara low income voters that their voice was a crucial component of this race. The Elections Committee and the PUEBLO Action Fund volunteers are looking to the future for the November 2010 elections. “While we had a very successful June Primary election we need to start preparing and educating our community on the local races and important measures that will be appearing in the ballot” said Carlos Perez, Elections Committee member. If you would like to be part of the endorsement process of PUEBLO Action Fund or part of the team of volunteers for the November of 2010 elections join our Elections Committee. Meetings are every other Wednesday. Next Elections Committee meeting is Wednesday August 11th at 6:30p.m. at the PUEBLO Office. Call our PUEBLO office to RSVP.
Housing Committee
Thursday, July 15th, PUEBLO’s housing committee was present at the Planning Commission Meeting. The reason for the attendance to the meeting was to advocate for the smooth vote for the approval of the Bradley Studios apartment. This is a new apartment complex of mixed use housing. “Although, I was not able to attend the Planning Commission meeting because it is during my work time hours I recognize the need for Santa Barbara to build more low income housing that is close to downtown. I am a beneficiary of low income housing but I live in Isla Vista but work Downtown. I travel every day on the bus. I am glad to hear that the project has been approved” said Maria Sanchez leader of PUEBLO’s housing committee. There were several individuals and organizations there in support of the Bradley Studios project and we are glad that the Planning Commission was able to compromise with the changes and approve a much needed project in our community.
