Hello Pueblistas!

We hope that you are all recuperating and celebrating now that election day has passed. Below you will find the results of propositions, candidates and measures that PUEBLO Action Fund took a stance on. All of the hard work PAF put towards getting out the vote would not have been possible without our hard working and powerful volunteers, these wonderful people are recognized below.
The work is not over! Now that this election is over we will need to prepare for our next round of electoral work for 2011, please consider helping PUEBLO Action Fund build our base for next year’s Santa Barbara City Council election by being part of our membership drive, starting next week (more information below).
Thank you so much for your continued support for working families across Santa Barbara County. Together we can continue to encourage low-income and Latino voters to vote on behalf of their interests in order to build a Central Coast that respects and embraces working families.

Hola Pueblistas!

Esperamos que esten recuperando y celebrando ya que paso el dia de las elecciones. El Fondo de Accion de PUEBLO tomo posiciones sobre varios candidatos, propuestas y medidas- abajo estan los resultados. Todo el trabajo que hicimos en estas elecciones fue posible gracias a nuestros voluntarios increíbles.
El trabajo no se ha acabado! Ahora que se termino esta eleccion tendremos que empezar a preparnos para las proximas elecciones del concilio de Santa Barbara el proximo año, empezaremos nuestra campaña de membresía esta semana (mas información abajo).
Muchismas gracias por su apoyo para las familias trabajadoras a travez el condado de Santa Barbara. Juntos podemos continuar a motivar a los votantes de bajos ingresos y Latinos a votar por sus interseses y nuestra comunidad.

CALIFORNIA, WE MADE IT!
CALIFORNIA, LO HICIMOS!

People of color and immigrant voters made themselves heard on November 2nd. According to the LA Times the Latino vote was a key factor behind the poor performance of the Republicans in our state compared to the GOP’s victories across the nation. According to the article, State’s Latinos block a GOP surge, “Nationally non-whites made up only 22% of the Tuesday electorate; in California they made up to 38% “ (LA Times, 11.4.2010).

El 2 de Noviembre los votantes inmigrantes y personas de color hicieron que la nacion oyera sus voces. Según el periódico LA Times, el voto Latino fue un factor clave en el rendimiento bajo de los republicanos, comparado con las victorias del partido republicano atreves la nación. Según el articulo, State’s Latinos block a GOP surge, “Por la nación, personas de color eran 22% de los que votaron el Martes, en California eran 38%” (LA Times, 11.4.2010).

We will give you more updates on the immigrant and people of color turn out locally as we gather and analyze the information from the Santa Barbara County.

Here are the results of our endorsements. Like expected, the South Coast progressive turnout was crucial in getting elected the candidates we supported. However, in Santa Maria much work remains to be done to educate, inspire and mobilize progressive voters.

The following three propositions intended to provide structural changes to the budget and fiscal systems of the state of California. Here is the analysis by CA Partnership:
Los siguientes 3 proposiciones fueron creadas para proveer cambios estructurales al presupuesto y el sistema fiscal de California. Aquí esta el análisis del CA Partnership.

Proposition 24: Closes corporate tax loopholes FAILED
Proposicion 24: Cerrar los hoyos de impuestos para las corporaciones: FALLO
This measure was intended to repeal a set of special tax breaks to prevent the loss of over a billion state dollars next year. However, with the failure to pass this measure, these egregious and unfair tax breaks are set to take effect in 2011 and will reduce funds available for education, children’s healthcare, social services, and transportation.
Esta medida fue creada para quitar opciones especiales que usan las corporaciones para evitar pagar sus impuestos. Como esta medida fallo, habran menos fondos disponibles para la educación, salud publico para los niños, servicios sociales, y el transporte.

Proposition 25: Allow majority vote on state budget PASSED!
Proposicion 25: Cambiar el voto a una simple mayoria para pasar el presupuesto estatal: PASO!
Every year, budget gridlock hurts schools, threatens vital services and costs taxpayers millions. Prop 25 targets this broken system, holding legislators accountable when they fail to pass the budget on time and reducing the 2/3 budget requirement to a simple majority.

Although this is one step in the right direction in reforming the outdated budget process, we still need a better way to raise revenues. With Proposition 25 in place, we will have further incentive to pass the budget on time, but not necessarily to craft a budget that considers revenue solutions because the 2/3 requirement still applies to pass any tax or revenue. With the passage of Proposition 26 as well, we will also now need a 2/3 requirement for fees and this will greatly affect any budget that is proposed.

Cada año, la paralización del presupuesto hace daño a las escuelas, amenaza servicios cruciales, y cuesta los contribuyentes dinero. Esta proposición cambia este sistema, y hace que los legisladores sean penalizados si no aprueban el presupuesto antes de la fecha limite. Esta proposicion hace que el propuesto estatal pase con solamente la mayoria de votos (50% ) en vez de 2/3 de los votos de la legislatura.

Proposition 26: Requires 2/3 votes to increase state revenues PASSED
Proposicion 26: Cambia a un voto de 2/3 para pasar incremento de multas: PASO
Prop 26 will make it easier for corporations to avoid paying fees to clean up their pollution and other harm to the public, passing that cost on to taxpayers. This will also result in a major reduction in revenue for our state budget at a time when education and critical services for our most vulnerable communities are being cut.



La Proposicion 26 hace que las corporaciones eviten sus multas para sacar la contaminacion que crean, haciendo que los contribuyentes paguen para limpiar esta contaminacion. Esta proposición resultara en una reducción de fondos en el presupuesto para educación y servicios cruciales para las comunidades mas vulnerables.

We couldn’t have had such successful results from these elections if it weren’t for the hard work of our organizer Grecia Lima. Grecia’s last day working here was last Wednesday; she has brought so much to our organization over the past two years. She has moved to San Francisco and we are sure she will have an impact like the incredible one she has left on Santa Barbara.

Las elecciones no hubieran sido tan exitosas si no fuera por el trabajo de nuestra organizadora Grecia Lima. Su ultimo dia de trabajo fue el miércoles de la semana pasada, ella contribuyo tanto a esta organizacion durante los 2 años pasados. Se mudo a San Francisco, y estamos seguros de que va a affectar tanto a esa area, como afecto a nuestra comunidad en Santa Barbara.

HOW WE CAN PREPARE FOR THE NEXT ELECTIONS
COMO PODEMOS PREPARNOS PARA LA PROXIMA ELECCION

When it comes to elections PUEBLO Action Fund is lucky to have such a wonderful volunteer base and a successful record as resources, however none of our work is possible without having the financial means to continue. PUEBLO Action Fund believes that contacting voters personally has the strongest impact ,this means that we must find funding for extra phones, material for flyers, food to keep our hardworking volunteers fed, and also paying the staff for their time spent coordinating our campaigns. Due to the PAF’s political nature, many foundations are not allowed to donate to our organization. This means that your donations truly are what sustain this movement.

Can’t make a donation yourself? Help us get others to contribute! Will be having a membership drive within the next two weeks. Come by our office, make some phone calls to our supporters and let them know that by making a simple donation they can help insure success for our organization in the 2011 Elections!

COMO PODEMOS PREPARNOS PARA LA PROXIMA ELECCION


Como organizacion el Fondo de Accion de PUEBLO esta muy dichosa de tener una base fuerte de voluntarios y una historia exitosa como recursos, pero nuestro trabajo no seria posible sin el apoyo financiero que recibimos. El Fondo de Accion de PUEBLO cree que la manera mas efectiva de ganar una campaña, esto quiere decir que necesitamos conseguir los fondos para teléfonos adicionales, materiales para volantes, comida para nuestros voluntarios trabajadores, y también para poder pagar nuestro personal por el tiempo que pasan coordinando las campañas. PAF es una organización política, y por esta razón muchas fundaciones no pueden dar donaciones a nuestra organización. Esto quiere decir que las donaciones de ustedes realmente son las que sostienen este movimiento.

Usted no puede contribuir? Ayúdenos a convencer a otros para que donen! Tendremos nuestra campaña de membrecía en las próximas dos semanas. Venga a nuestra oficina, haga unas llamadas a nuestros aliados y avisales del hecho de que puedan asegurar éxito para nuestra organización en las elecciones en 2011 con una sola donación!
