Tere Doorknocking
Community Action Training

On February 18th-20th PUEBLO sent 4 of our staff and 4 leaders to the Community Action Training (CAT) put on by the Center for Third World Organizing, CAT provides entry-level organizer training to individuals, staff, and members of community-based organizations through field work, role plays, and discussions. During this high-intensity three day training, CAT participants learn how to door-knock as a tool for recruiting and mobilizing constituents, participate in campaign development and actions, and learn to appreciate the legacy of organizing in communities of color and its relevance in today's fight for social justice.

Tere Jurado, Santa Barbara immigration committee member said the following about the training, “I felt that the CAT training was excellent it is one of the best experiences I have had in my life, we need to bring this training to Santa Barbara and Santa Maria. The thing I liked the most from this training was the ability of the facilitating organizers and presenters to make me feel empowered and that any change in the name of social-justice can be achieved. One of the ways I will be applying what I learned in the training will be by bringing this training to our communities of Santa Barbara and Santa Maria to empower and train more members of our community.”

Consuelo Aguilar, member of Santa Maria’s immigration committee said the following about the training, “We learned theoretically and through practice. We learned how to act as an organization. We discusses long histories of abuse against workers, and how workers have organized against these abuses. Learning these stories made me wonder why we allow similar abuses to happen to us even though we are leaders. We need to be alert about things happening in our community and take action against injustices. Wherever we go we believe we can make change. There are many ways to make social change”

Welcome Laura Ronchietto, PUEBLO’s new Coalition Coordinator for the Insecurity of S-Comm Campaign

Laura Ronchietto is the new coalition coordinator for the Insecurity of Secure Communities (S-Comm) Campaign at PUEBLO. Laura is a native of Mendoza, Argentina, who was raised in Santa Barbara. After graduating from UCSB with a BA in Studio Art and a minor in History of Art and Architecture, she studied and taught yoga for many years. She became outraged at the gross injustices facing immigrants in our community, became involved with PUEBLO's immigration committee and we now welcome her as our new Coalition Coordinator. As coalition coordinator she will facilitate and bring unity and strength of the people of Santa Barbara. Through commitment, faith, perseverance and trust the coalition will change the gross injustices that are facing our immigrant community. Programs such as S-Comm, which aim to deport everyone who is deportable, have a very damaging effect on our society. Children are left without parents, crimes go unreported and fear allows oppression to thrive. The coalition will work towards creating a stable, healthy community for our children and us by pushing back against S-Comm and unjust deportations.

In 2008 and 2010 California voters passed ballot measures which changed the way state and federal legislative districts are drawn. The redistricting process is now conducted by an independent commission, not the state legislature. State Assembly, State Senate and US Congressional District lines will all change for the 2012 elections (based on new population data from the 2010 US Census), having a potentially great impact on how Santa Barbara is represented in Congress and in Sacramento.
- Are you interested in redistricting?
- Would you like to testify for the Citizen’s Redistricting Commission about your community and how it should be represented?
- Would you like to learn more about the redistricting process for Assembly, Senate and Congressional lines and find out how you can participate

TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT TENANTS’ RIGHTS!

Two years ago, 36 low-income families were evicted from the Modoc Apartments due to renovations. This eviction disrupted the school year for over 90 children and displaced many families in the middle of the holiday season.

Two years later, the Board of Supervisors will finally vote on the amendments to Ordinance 4444, an Ordinance that would protect tenants who are evicted at no fault of their own. The Rental Housing Roundtable, a coalition of over 30 organizations and landlords, has worked to ensure that tenants evicted due to building code violations, demolition or renovation are fairly compensated for the disruption that evictions cause to families and to the community. The hearing will take place on:

Tuesday, December 7
9:30am
County Administrative Building (Anacapa and Anapamu)
105 E. Anapamu St (4th floor)

North County: Betteravia Government Center’s Board of Supervisors Hearing Room, 511 E. Lakeside Parkway, Suite 141, Santa Maria (remote access)

The Rental Housing Roundtable urges community members to voice their support for the amendments proposed by the coalition by attending and/or speaking at the hearing. Please wear black.

If you cannot make it to the hearing, CALL or EMAIL your Supervisor and tell her/him that you support the amendments to Ordinance 4444 recommended by the Rental Housing Roundtable. Here is a list of the Supervisors:

9:30am
County Administrative Building (Anacapa y Anapamu) 105 E. Anapamu St (4to piso)

Santa Maria: Betteravia Government Center’s Board of Supervisors Hearing Room, 511 E. Lakeside Parkway, Suite 141, Santa Maria (remote access)

CALIFORNIA, WE MADE IT!
CALIFORNIA, LO HICIMOS!

People of color and immigrant voters made themselves heard on November 2nd. According to the LA Times the Latino vote was a key factor behind the poor performance of the Republicans in our state compared to the GOP’s victories across the nation. According to the article, State’s Latinos block a GOP surge, “Nationally non-whites made up only 22% of the Tuesday electorate; in California they made up to 38% “ (LA Times, 11.4.2010).

We will give you more updates on the immigrant and people of color turn out locally as we gather and analyze the information from the Santa Barbara County.

THE RESULTS! LOS RESULTADOS!

Here are the results of our endorsements. Like expected, the South Coast progressive turnout was crucial in getting elected the candidates we supported. However, in Santa Maria much work remains to be done to educate, inspire and mobilize progressive voters.

Measure S: A sales tax to build a new jail in our County: FAILED

Yes on Measure Q & Measure R: Funding for Infrastructure improvements in schools PASSED!

STATEWIDE MEASURES
Proposition 19: Legalization and taxation of cannabis FAILED

Proposition 20: Expands state redistricting commission to include congressional districts PASSED

Proposition 21: Vehicle license fee to fund state parks FAILED

Proposition 22: Prohibit State From Taking Some Local Funds PASSED
Proposicion 22: Presupuestar con la Urna: PASO

Proposition 23: Overturns climate change legislation FAILED!

The following three propositions intended to provide structural changes to the budget and fiscal systems of the state of California. Here is the analysis by CA Partnership:

Proposition 24: Closes corporate tax loopholes FAILED
This measure was intended to repeal a set of special tax breaks to prevent the loss of over a billion state dollars next year. However, with the failure to pass this measure, these egregious and unfair tax breaks are set to take effect in 2011 and will reduce funds available for education, children’s healthcare, social services, and transportation.

Proposition 25: Allow majority vote on state budget PASSED!
Every year, budget gridlock hurts schools, threatens vital services and costs taxpayers millions. Prop 25 targets this broken system, holding legislators accountable when they fail to pass the budget on time and reducing the 2/3 budget requirement to a simple majority.

Although this is one step in the right direction in reforming the outdated budget process, we still need a better way to raise revenues. With Proposition 25 in place, we will have further incentive to pass the budget on time, but not necessarily to craft a budget that considers revenue solutions because the 2/3 requirement still applies to pass any tax or revenue. With the passage of Proposition 26 as well, we will also now need a 2/3 requirement for fees and this will greatly affect any budget that is proposed.

Proposition 26: Requires 2/3 votes to increase state revenues PASSED
Prop 26 will make it easier for corporations to avoid paying fees to clean up their pollution and other harm to the public, passing that cost on to taxpayers. This will also result in a major reduction in revenue for our state budget at a time when education and critical services for our most vulnerable communities are being cut.

----

Proposition 27: Eliminates costly redistricting commission FAILED

Thank you Grecia!
We couldn’t have had such successful results from these elections if it weren’t for the hard work of our organizer Grecia Lima. Grecia’s last day working here was last Wednesday; she has brought so much to our organization over the past two years. She has moved to San Francisco and we are sure she will have an impact like the incredible one she has left on Santa Barbara.

Good luck Grecia!

Gracias Grecia!

Suerte Grecia!

HOW WE CAN PREPARE FOR THE NEXT ELECTIONS
COMO PODEMOS PREPARNOS PARA LA PROXIMA ELECCION

When it comes to elections PUEBLO Action Fund is lucky to have such a wonderful volunteer base and a successful record as resources, however none of our work is possible without having the financial means to continue. PUEBLO Action Fund believes that contacting voters personally has the strongest impact ,this means that we must find funding for extra phones, material for flyers, food to keep our hardworking volunteers fed, and also paying the staff for their time spent coordinating our campaigns. Due to the PAF’s political nature, many foundations are not allowed to donate to our organization. This means that your donations truly are what sustain this movement.

Can’t make a donation yourself? Help us get others to contribute! Will be having a membership drive within the next two weeks. Come by our office, make some phone calls to our supporters and let them know that by making a simple donation they can help insure success for our organization in the 2011 Elections!

# 2. Arizona’s SB 1070 Further Polarizes our Nation

-A letter written by our Executive Director Belen Seara in light of the
enforcement of SB1070 on July 29th,2010

At a time when the federal government should be enacting a humane and fair immigration reform, the state of Arizona is implementing a regressive and unrealistic policy that will only further polarize the nation. PUEBLO applauds U.S District Judge Susan Bolton for blocking the implementation of some of the most controversial provisions of SB 1070. However, the overall law will still be implemented on July 29.

Arizona’s SB 1070 is not the solution to our broken immigration system. And worse, it will undermine public safety. This type of anti-immigrant legislation results in mistrust between the immigrant community and law enforcement. Those who are witness or victims of crimes, domestic violence or robbery will not report to the police for fear of being detained. That puts at risk the safety of not just immigrants but the whole community.
But what is most disturbing about this legislation is that legalizes racial profiling by requiring police officers to ask about immigration status to anyone they stop that looks like an undocumented immigrant. Moreover, the law criminalizes American citizens or legal residents who transport, harbor or shield undocumented immigrants, making even the driving of undocumented children to school a misdemeanor.

PUEBLO supporters should call the federal government today to ask for humane and comprehensive immigration reform. You can visit www.reformimmigrationforamerica.org to send an email or fax to the White House.

# 3. Rental Housing Roundable Update/ Noticas de la Mesa Redonda de Inquilinos

Rental Housing Roundable Update

Since the Rental Housing Roundtable's impressive showing at the Board of Supervisors hearing on April 20th, the coalition has been working hard to ensure that the amendments to Ordinance 4444 get passed when it comes back before the Board in October. Ordinance 4444, a tenants' rights ordinance, would strengthen protections for tenants who are evicted at no fault of their own. Specifically, the Rental Housing Roundtable seeks to mitigate the social and economic impacts of evictions due to condo conversion, demolition or renovation. The Rental Housing Roundtable was created to address the lack of legal protections for Santa Barbara renters in order to end unjust evictions and unfair treatment of tenants, increase rental units available and develop cooperative ownership. Recently, the Rental Housing Roundtable held a campaign assessment to not only look at the current campaign, but also to examine the local rental culture in the area to determine new areas to focus on. The campaign assessment brought to light the need for the Rental Housing Roundtable to continue advocating for tenants and promoting progressive policy changes. If you would like to get involved with the Rental Housing Roundtable or if you have any questions, please email sbrentalhousing@gmail.com or call (805)-882-2484.

South County Update (Immigration, Election & Housing Committees)

Immigration Committee

After a very successful community values forum, in which our Santa Barbara community
had a courageous conversation about the issues affecting our local immigrant communities and attempted to provide for solutions. The Immigration Committee continues to be part of the national and local movement for just, humane and practical solutions for Immigration Reforms and change of legislation. “Our push for comprehensive immigration reform is like a language; it will die out when there are not enough people speaking it” said Ana G. Cid, UCSB student and member of PUEBLO’s Immigration Committee. We invite you to join us at our next Immigration Committee meetings. They are every other THURSDAY at 6:30p.m. at the PUEBLO Office , please call our office for the specific dates.

Elections Committee

June 8th of 2010 thousands of Santa Barbara voters turned out to the polls and dozens of PUEBLO Action Fund volunteers went door to door to remind Santa Barbara low income voters that their voice was a crucial component of this race. The Elections Committee and the PUEBLO Action Fund volunteers are looking to the future for the November 2010 elections. “While we had a very successful June Primary election we need to start preparing and educating our community on the local races and important measures that will be appearing in the ballot” said Carlos Perez, Elections Committee member. If you would like to be part of the endorsement process of PUEBLO Action Fund or part of the team of volunteers for the November of 2010 elections join our Elections Committee. Meetings are every other Wednesday. Next Elections Committee meeting is Wednesday August 11th at 6:30p.m. at the PUEBLO Office. Call our PUEBLO office to RSVP.

Housing Committee

Thursday, July 15th, PUEBLO’s housing committee was present at the Planning Commission Meeting. The reason for the attendance to the meeting was to advocate for the smooth vote for the approval of the Bradley Studios apartment. This is a new apartment complex of mixed use housing. “Although, I was not able to attend the Planning Commission meeting because it is during my work time hours I recognize the need for Santa Barbara to build more low income housing that is close to downtown. I am a beneficiary of low income housing but I live in Isla Vista but work Downtown. I travel every day on the bus. I am glad to hear that the project has been approved” said Maria Sanchez leader of PUEBLO’s housing committee. There were several individuals and organizations there in support of the Bradley Studios project and we are glad that the Planning Commission was able to compromise with the changes and approve a much needed project in our community.

1) In another attempt to fix the broken immigrations system at the local level the Santa Maria City Council will be considering a recommendation to implement the E-Verify program for a six-month trial period.

Local anti-immigrant ordinances have not solved immigration problems, on the contrary they divide communities, pit neighbor against neighbor and often result in discrimination against citizens and non-citizens.

Our communities are under attack. The values that we share are not being reflected in our social or economic systems. This is a moment for communities to come together and ORGANIZE. We can make a difference, united we are stronger. Come and learn more about PUEBLO and ACT with our leaders by pushing for social change.

The COMMUNITY MEETING will take place this Sunday July 18th at 3:30 p.m. at Presidio Springs 721 Laguna St. Santa Barbara, CA. Childcare and simultaneous translation will be provided, if possible bring a dish to share. For questions, comments or concerns call our office at 805-882-2484.

This TUESDAY June 8th is ELECTION DAY

GOTV - Get Out the Vote!

This TUESDAY, JUNE 8TH is ELECTION DAY!

With competitive races and dirty campaign ads confusing voters, this difference in this election will be our ability to turnout working class, low-income, Latino and progressive voters. We have the opportunity to get out and support some great local candidates and we need to mobilize voters in our neighborhoods if we hope to see Das Williams, Janet Wolf, and Joyce Dudley elected to continue working with them on improving the quality of life for all residents county-wide.

We will be knocking doors, making phone calls, and leaving fliers to make sure that our communities know where to vote and who will best represent our interests. We need at least 100 volunteers to make this election a success. Invite a friend and give us a call to let us know when and where you can help out. We will be contacting voters in Santa Barbara and Goleta on the following days and times:
